Today Trinidad and Tobago celebrates it’s 45th Anniversary of Independence. However, it means little to anyone, at least so it seems.
A question was posed to some people by the Express newspaper asking what Independence means to them, and interestingly, some of them answered saying that we would have probably been better off if we had stayed dependent on England. Now, I know that we are not really a first world country and maybe a bit fucked up, but we are better off being independent. Maybe if England had really ruled us with an iron fist like they did to the USA and India and we actually had to fight for our freedom then we might have really appreciated what being independent is about. Instead we were given our Independence, so we don’t really care about it; in fact we don’t seem to care much about anything that goes on in this country.
Politicians are running the fucking country into the ground creating a bunch of mindless dependents. It seems that Eric Williams knew what he was doing when he formed the PNM so long ago and started milking the country of it’s hard earned money. He knew that there were those who just wanted to be dependent and follow like mindless drones. Then the others that just wanted to sit back and look on, silently complaining to themselves, but never doing anything about it.
So after 45 years, are we truly Independent…. I think not. We are independent on paper only, but not so in our minds. I always say, until all those who lived in colonial times (those older than 45 obviously) die out, we will never shake off the colonial thinking. Unfortunately, there are still too many of them alive, and much of them are currently running the country. Is it any wonder we are so fucked up? We like it so!
